Nike takes a shot with having Colin Kaepernick as the face of their new ad campaign.

Colin Kaepernick is the new face of Nike’s “Just Do It” 30th anniversary ad campaign and a lot of people have something to say about it. Some people love it, and some people hate it, vowing to boycott their products and burning every Nike product you have. Kaepernick was pictured with the words, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” This is exactly what Kaepernick did, during a football game Kaepernick took a knee during the American National Anthem to support the ongoing mistreatment of African Americans. He believed in something, and not only did he stand up for it, he sacrificed everything he had for it. Once Kaepernick became a free agent in 2017, he was unable to be resigned onto another football team. This is when Nike swooped in and brought him in to be apart of the “Just Do It” ad campaign. A lot of people responded very poorly to this new ad campaign. Many people started burning Nike logos and even their Nike shoes. Personally, I like what Nike did, and apparently so did a lot of people. After the new ad campaign, Nike’s sales went up by 31%. Nike has been receiving a lot of attention recently, and it has turned out for the good, Nike’s shares were up slightly to $85.67. Even if Nike was bashed and their sales dropped by 50%, I would still buy products from them. Many people thought when Nike released the ad campaign featuring Kaepernick, it would be the downfall of Nike, but it turned out after all the backlash from the community Nike’s sales did go up by a bit. What surprises me is that people will protest a protest.

After taking a look at some of the responses the Nike ad is receiving, I believe that the people are responding to this message in a very poor manner. I strongly believe that Nike is trying to say something about the on-going racial injustice. Personally, I like the ad and I am a diehard fan for Nike, and I own many of their products, and I would never burn any of them. The public response to this ad does not affect me, it just amazes me how people are spending their cold hard cash on products that are somewhat pretty expensive just to burn them.

  1. I agree with what you have said Ryan because Nike believed that using Colin Kaepernick would show that they are against police brutality and racial injustice. Nike was smart by using Colin as their campaign face because as a company they are trying to get more publicity and by using Colin, they definitely achieved that. Nike does have some good products and I would still buy them even if their sales dropped by 50% because what matters is the product their selling, not the way they advertise it. The public's response was an unnecessary response to the situation. I believe Colin Kaepernick is a role model to all and by Nike using him as their campaign face shows that they promote equality.

  2. I have to agree with you Ryan. Like you, I am also a Nike die hard and would buy their products regardless of what the public said about the Nike ad. I must add that it is a strange idea to burn the nike shoes, since they have already been bought and will not affect their sales. Just like you, I personally like the ad and think that the way people are responding is unnecessary. I'm sure we can both agree that what Colin Kaepernick is standing for (or rather kneeling for) is the right thing.
